Revitalizing Chicago's near north side.
Located in Cabrini-Green, the heart of the Near North side of Chicago, sits Terrace 459, a Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) affordable housing development. The latest project in the area’s revitalization, the development adds more than one hundred rental units between two buildings. Terrace 459 provides dramatic downtown and city views with reasonable rates for one- or two-bedroom units.
Wells developed a one-of-a-kind building solution. The speed and versatility of construction played a major role as one of the key challenges was building the structure within a busy urban setting with no onsite storage and staging areas during the winter months. The accelerated time schedule and the need for winter erection provided an ideal opportunity for precast to demonstrate its versatility. The precast building solution allowed for manufacturing off-site, with shipping and immediate erection upon delivery to the site.
Wells building solutions provided benefits for occupants and developers, creating a facility that is durable, thermally efficient, reduces noise and limits annual maintenance. The final mixed income development represents the renaissance of a well-known Chicago neighborhood and is a testament to the vision and voice of residents and community partners.
